Ski Resort
Eight miles outside Brasov and perched 1,200m above sea level within the dramatic Postavaru Massif, lies the small alpine town of Poiana Brasov. The rich coniferous forests and stunning mountain peaks steeped in fresh, open air make this location a beautiful natural setting for outdoor types and mountain lovers alike. As Romania's premier ski resort, Poiana Brasov is also the go-to destination for skiers and snowboarders who take to the slopes for a few days of snow sports activity.
The ski season in Poiana Brasov runs from mid November to mid March, where temperatures average -4 degrees in the mountains and snow cover ranges between 50 to 60cm. With over 13,000m of runs, the skiing is suitable for all levels of experience and ski equipment can be rented in advance along with ski passes. See below for more details. Despite the range of pistes, advanced skiers may find the number of challenging slopes limited and might want to engage in other activities aside from skiing. For absolute beginners, it is possible to arrange lessons with English and German speaking ski instructors and for those who prefer not to ski, a ride in a horse drawn sleigh is the perfect way to admire the winter panoramas. Advanced skiers may find the number of more challenging slopes to be limited.
The ski resort is also a short distance away from the Medieval town of Brasov. With picturesque cobbled streets and a plethora of inviting cafés, an afternoon wandering around this quaint town is the perfect way to wind down. Brasov is also home to the legendary Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress. For more information on places of interest in the town, please see the section on Brasov.
Ski Pass & Equipment Rental
Untravelled Paths equips you with everything you need to take to the slopes. Ski passes can be left at your hotel reception for hassle free pick up and ski equipment is fitted right next to the nearest lift up to the pistes. To avoid carrying heavy skiis around the resort, all your equipment can be left where hired near the slopes. See below for ski pass and equipment rental prices.
Après-Ski & Nightlife
Poiana Brasov has a good après-ski scene with great value restaurants and a few bars which have music and dancing in the evening. Pub Rossignol is a popular hangout with visitors and locals who congregate there after a snow-filled day on the slopes. We also recommend Stana Turistica to those looking for a traditional restaurant serving Romanian grub.
The neighbouring town of Brasov offers a larger variety of entertainment and nightlife with clusters of delightful cafés dotted in and around the square. For those looking for a warm place to watch a sports match and a chilled pint of Guinness, Deans Irish Pub is a home away from home. The bars are open late and the locals are more than happy to point you in the direction of the town’s nightclubs should you wish to dance the night away.
The restaurants in Brasov are wonderfully cosy offering great value meals. For an extra special evening, we recommend booking a table at the romantic, candle-lit Bella Muzica which is set in the catacombs of the gothic Black Church and provides the perfect opportunity to taste some quality authentic food in a romantic and historic setting. Keller Steak House and Siril Vamii are also great options for an evening meal.
