Sinaia
Sinaia is small town high in the mountains above the Prahova River valley, just east of the Becegi Mountains and within the Bucegi National Park. It was named after the Sinaia monastery around which it was built, which in turn was named after Mount Sinai. The town is a fantastic gateway to the mountains and the various trekking routes that eager walkers and skiers can explore. The views from the mountain ridges are stunning and Sinaia is a great place from which to disappear into the wilderness for a few days.
A site not to be missed in Sinaia is the ornately decorated Peles Castle. The castle was built as a summer home for King Carol I one of the great Romanian kings. King Carol fell in love with the rugged and magnificent mountain scenery of Sinaia and in 1873 he decided to build a hunting lodge and summer retreat that has survived intact to this day and is definitely well worth a visit.
