Danube Delta
The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, and bursts into life when spring arrives in May along with the migration of hundreds of birds. Even for the not so keen bird enthusiasts the abundance of colourful and strange looking birds is striking. This beautiful World Heritage Site, consists of an intricate mix of channels, streamlets, lakes and marshes which can largely only be explored by boat. To reach Sfantul Gheorghe in the south of the Delta involves a 70 km boat journey, but takes you into the heart of the Delta community. This old, sparsely populated fishing village offers a proper insight into the Romanian way of life in the Delta – don’t expect anything but delicious, fresh fish on the menu though!
