"Brasov's medieval and baroque heart is gorgeously well preserved" - Frommers

100 miles northwest of Bucharest lies the medieval town of Brasov. A world away from the lively buzz of the capital city, Brasov provides the perfect base for exploring the Transylvanian countryside including the mysterious, hidden depths of Dracula's icy Castle. The old town of Brasov displays striking gothic architecture reminiscent of the town's traditional past evident in structures like the Black Church and the Black Tower. Brasov is a wonderful setting for those who prefer to take in the atmosphere at a leisurely pace, ambling around the cobbled streets, stopping for a hot drink in one of the clusters of quaint cafes or heading to a cosy restaurant for some local grub.

Organised activities include walking tours around Brasov Old Town, visits to the Rasnov Fortress and of course a chilling excursion around Bran Castle, home of the cult Dracula. See below for more information.

Brasov is also a short distance away from Romania's premier ski resort, Poiana Brasov, set against the beautifully untouched Ardeal mountains. For those wishing to add a few days of skiing to their package, or for more information, please see the section on Poiana Brasov.
