Bird Watching

The Danube Delta is undisputedly Europe's most important wetland serving as a summer breeding ground for many species of birds. At last count there were over 270 bird species to be found in the Delta, hardly surprising when you consider that it lies on the major migration route. Visitors will be able to see a range of birds and wildlife ranging from pelicans (White & Dalmatian species) to storks (both the Black and the White species) and of course the Greater Flamingo, you will find an array of unusual and rare birds as well. Spotting these birds is where the fun begins, as you explore the depths of the delta by a small motor powered fishing boat that takes you down the maze of channels to the beautiful bird reservations where you will enjoy the best bird watching Europe has to offer.

Each year birds fly for miles to inhabit the Danube Delta, here is a breakdown of the number of the 274 species according to the geographical origin and season.

Summer     Winter
European 108   Arctic 27
Mediterranean 29   Siberian 32

Of the many species of birds, 176 have been identified as brooding (sedentary and migratory) and 98 non-brooding (winter, passage, erratic and accidental).
