Bear Tracking

"The country's mountain scenery and great diversity of wildlife, its cultures and people, and a way of life that at times seems out of the last century, leave few who visit unaffected."

Rough Guide

For wildlife lovers, there are few greater experiences in Europe than observing the mighty brown bear roaming free in its natural habitat in the extensive forests in the mountains and hills of Romania. Brasov, a small medieval town situated on the cusp of the Carpathian mountain, is home to one of the few remaining strong and healthy populations of the European brown bear (Ursus Arctos). It is estimated that 40% of all European bears can be found in Romania, making it not only a key conservation area but an unrivalled destination to watch and track bears.

As with all things involving nature, nothing is for certain and actually seeing brown bears is probable but by no means guaranteed, but that's what makes spotting bears in their natural habitat such a special and unique experience. With the assistance of our expert local trackers, 2 afternoons bear tracking offers around a good chance of actually seeing bears in particular, but plenty of wildlife (including possibly the grey wolf, lynx and an array of birds of prey), beautiful scenery and breathtaking landscape is assured. For those who wish to have the odds even more in their favour you can stake out a bear hide which almost guarantees seeing bears each visit and you are likely to see far more than one bear. So for many, the combination of some time tracking bears and a visit to the bear hide satisfies those wishing to see bears.

Our local and professional guide will collect you and take you to the area of most recent bear activity before you embark along the trails and tracks of bears and other wild animals. Your guide will point out any signs of recent bear activity and will explain all signs and tracks along the way. It is worth remembering that wild bears will not actually wish to see you therefore a period of hiding in trees and bushes is required to allow you the chance to see these animals in their natural habitat. These prolonged periods of hiding require patience and a real desire to see bears. Although waiting for long periods can at times seem endless and tiring, once you actually see a bear you will forget about the length of time you waited and the euphoric moment will be etched in your memory forever.

Please note: For all our animal tracking and trekking, a reasonable level of fitness is required.
